Are you alternative?

I’ve never been able to work out where I sit on the cool –> alternative lines. This was most evident to me when I was in high school & needed a weekend job. Where did I apply? Where did I fit in?

I was far too uncool for the funky jobs like City Beach. Though I did work in a surf store briefly – I think I lasted 3 shifts before calling & quitting because I’d never been so bored in my life.

I was fair too mainstream for the ‘alternative’ jobs like Borders. I like reading, but I didn’t have that jeans/piercing/funky hair look down pat enough to get a job there.

Fast forward a decade and a bit into my working life and I still don’t fit it. Yes, I have a degree, I work in a relevant job in a corporate company doing important (socially important, not wankery type important) work. Yet I still don’t fit in.

Am I too middle-class? You all know how much I love Community, so here’s a quote that outlines where I think I may be:

“You’re average, Britta Perry. You’re every kid on the playground that didn’t get picked on. You’re a business casual potted plant, a human white sale, you’re VH-1, Robocop 2 and Back To The Future 3. You’re the centre slice of a square cheese pizza…actually that sounds delicious…I’m the centre slice of a square cheese pizza. You’re Jim Belushi” *

Where do you think you fit in? Do you want to fit in? Is it annoying that we have moments in life where we’d like to know where we fit in? Is it all a matter of context?

* This quote belongs to Community. I don’t own Community. I think it’d be awesome if I did own Community though.

  1. I get a kick of pointing out how I don’t fit in. I went to a hipster event this weekend, and security found my unique style “refreshing.” I was basically the big nerd I am. Even when I have people around, and you’ve seen this, PJs or silly costumes ^_^

    1. I don’t mind not ‘fitting in’ but I think it just gets hard when it comes to employment. I have to fake a certain level to ‘fit in’ at a corporate job & I don’t really like it.
