How To Be Funny: Laugh Link

How To Be Funny: Laugh Link

I’ll be honest, I’m not really feeling all that funny at the moment, and totally blanked on what I could write for Laugh Link. So I thought I would look up how to be funny and collect a series of tips from around the internet:

  • Laughter is contagious. So don’t get vaccinated; this is one of those things you want to catch. It’s an attractive diseases. Or virus. Crap. Which would it be?
  • Pain is the number one category of humour. So all people who are funny like hurting themselves or others. So maybe don’t link up, because we’re hurting you? Hmm. Getting confused now.
  • You don’t have to be funny to be funny. Wait, what the?
  • Knowing pop culture will make you funny. (Or it will kill your brain cells with boredom.)
  • I didn’t really read this one because, lazy, but from the image and the opening line, it seems to be about charming people into a threesome.

But those tips were lame. So here are my tips:

  • Talk about one object in continuous, unrelated situations. Currently I talk about tomatoes a lot. I don’t even know anything about tomatoes.
  • Alliteration is absurdly adequate. It seems like a cheap ploy. It may very well be a cheap ploy.
  • Be loud. Because if you yell everyone down, no one can tell you that you’re not funny.
  • Be quiet. Because no one can tell you that you’re not funny if you don’t give them a chance to hear you.
  • Sit next to the lamest person you know. You’ll always be funniest that way.
  • See if you can make a sentence out of buzzwords. At the end of the day, your job is to break through the clutter to calibrate expectations and leverage the disruptive innovations so we can push outside the box and downsize to be hyperlocal so we can empower our exit strategy.
  • Eh, I don’t need to fill in this bullet point. The one above was good.
  • Look to politics for inspiration. They come out with a lot of shit, surely some of it can be used for humour.
  • Llamas. Always talk about llamas. What other word has a double l to start it?

  1. Ha! You’ve reminded me, I must work towards empowered goals to increase my synergy and meet overarching industry performance indicators 😉

    1. That corporate career will take off if you do 🙂

  2. Can one learn to be funny I wonder? I guess we find all types of things and people more funny than others. I once had to MC a wedding and I said a joke I found on Google and hardly anyone laughed, but the moment I put my husband down (in a fun way) everyone laughed and thought I was hilarious.

    1. I guess when it’s familiar or about something we know it might be funnier?

  3. You know what word is funnier than llama? Fork.
It’s just the weirdest word, especially if you say it over and over and over again.
I may very well be the lame person you should sit next to to make you look funny.

    1. Hehe and it sounds like it could be rude. Only funny if you’re as immature as me, of course…

  4. Ha! My only tip would be hang around people that laugh a lot and then you THINK you’re funny even when you’re not. I rarely laugh out loud at other people’s jokes. I laugh on the inside though. I do laugh out loud at things I read… like posts I read on the Laugh Link. The written word just tickles my fancy a bit more.

    1. I like it, a confidence booster!

  5. I don’t think I’m particularly funny so I need some of those pointers. I’m wry and slightly sarcastic but that’s about it!

PS I’m reminded though that what one person finds hilarious makes another gag – the stuff on Funniest Home Videos comes to mind. I HATE that sort of humour. #argh

    1. Oh those shows are terrible. There’s one funny clip, if you’re lucky. Most look like ambulance trips.

  6. If you want to be thought as low brow funny go for Fart, Bum, Wee, etc, etc jokes. It’s worked for hundreds of lame and vulgar movies.

But if you really want to be funny – Be observational, look for the faults in yourself (gently in others). Use snappy dialogue, create pictures with words that amuse and transport. Make people believe that the unusual is normal but not really.

Then again what do I know? If in doubt and looking for a laugh just say Wee, Bum and Fart a lot.

    1. Commercial movies = commercial farts? Hmm.

  7. Well played lovely! And yes I’m not a laugh a minute these days but even something vaguely amusing is better than bat-shit boring right?? Llamas – weird things aren’t they?

    1. Totally weird!
