Tips for a Speedy Morning

tips for a speedy morning

This morning decided it. I am the queen of getting out of bed, ready for work and into my car in 20 minutes.

tips for a speedy morning

For those of you in awe of my awesome life skillz, here are some tips to help you become as awesome as me:

Find your underwear the night before.

Women’s clothing is sexist, right? All sheer and flimsy and crap. Which means you have to see if your underwear is visible through your clothes before you get dressed. If you can be bothered/remember to check this, that is. I’m pretty terrible at it. I have yet to work out how to keep an underwear drawer from becoming a giant mess of mis-matched socks with holes in them, so I find it really helps the morning if I dig through the drawer for underwear the night before.

Wash your clothes the night before.

The real reason I try to find my clothes the night before is that I don’t have a great deal of clothes, and even fewer work clothes. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone to find my work clothes for the next day at 9pm and realised they’re all dirty. Not dirty as in mud, but dirty as in worn and I probably should wash them. That’s when I become thankful that my husband talked me into getting a dryer years ago and I throw them in, go to bed and tell him to stay up long enough to put them in the dryer for me. The best part is, he does!

Don’t make your lunch the night before.

I hate food that has been made ages before I eat it. Unless it’s leftovers or something I’ve cooked a large batch of and frozen. But sandwiches and stuff…yuck!

Do whatever wakes you up.

For me it’s a shower. The hard part of that is not staying in there when it’s winter. Because even though it’s Queensland and not really that cold, our houses aren’t built for any cold, so walking around naked is still not pleasant in winter.
If what wakes you up is coffee, do that.
Basically dedicate half your time to a super waking up activity so that you have the energy to blast through the rest of it.

Have a mental checklist.

Before I leave the house I check the following:

  • Am I wearing pants? (For some reason it’s only pants I’m worried I’ll forget, not tops.)
  • Do I have my wallet/phone/charger?
  • Am I holding my car keys? (Often, no, I’m not.)
  • Did I brush my teeth?

Streamlining tips:

  • Breakfast can be eaten while standing waiting for public transport.
  • Eyes can be double checked for morning goop on your phone (front camera!) or in your rear view mirror (only if you’re parked/safe).

Remember, no one is checking you out in the morning. They’re all doing what you’re doing: internally cursing winter and the fact it’s 7am.

  1. My hubby does the stay-up-for-the-washing/dryer thing too! Aren’t they gold? It takes me a full hour to get ready for work. And no, I am not going to streamline it because half of that is eating a piece of toast and drinking a cup of tea (essential)!

Haha but you do dedicate half your time to your main activity, and that seems to be the key!

  2. “Am I wearing pants? (For some reason it’s only pants I’m worried I’ll forget, not tops.” LOL!

I work the early shift 2 mornings a week, usually I like to shower the night before so I don’t have to get completely naked and stand in a cold bathroom at 5 am. But it doesn’t always work, because more often than not I wake up in a sweat! Gross.

Yep, especially in summer, you just have to shower when you get up!

  3. YES! A big “BLEURGH!” to sandwiches made the night before. It’s a one-way ticket to Wrongtown.

It’s just so gross. At least it’s not just me!

  4. I don’t like sandwiches made the night before either. I’ve never forgotten to put on pants…

I’ve never forgotten to, but I’m just sure I will one day!

  5. I realise it is appalling now but back in the 1990s I used to make my sandwiches for the week on a Sunday night and freeze them all. This was before MasterChef and cafe culture in Brisbane, obviously. These days I have discerning children who wouldn’t deign to touch a sandwich unless it was made within the last couple of hours.

      Oh I couldn’t do that! Frozen….

  6. Best Tip. Incorporate your commute with a trip to the bakery and coffee shop. It saves you time at home. It’s delicious and you are helping create employment. EVERYONE’S a winner.

Ah ha! A tip that wins on personal and external levels!

  7. Loving it! I usually take make sure I have clean clothes, sunglasses to hide bags and a hair tie in case my stripper hair is really dirty and I’m too lazy/tired to have a shower in the morning to wash it! x

I need to learn to wear sunnies, I feel like I perpetually have giant bags under my eyes. Plus, you know, sun safe and all that. But I just hate having things on my face.

  8. I make sure find my undies the night before too! It is definitely the key to everything else falling into place in my morning routine 🙂

It’s amazing how much the wrong undies slow down your day.
