Are You A Creature of Habit?

Are You A Creature of Habit

Do you ever stop to look at how you work? Do you call yourself (or others) a creature of habit? Or do you just go ahead and not worry about such things?

Are You A Creature of Habit

I actually find it mildly offensive to be thought of as a creature of habit. I feel like it implies I don’t have the ability to think for myself. That my actions are somehow not mine, or that I am being compared to a robot. Or something.

And yet, when I apply being a creature of habit to what I actually do, it’s obvious that frequency helps me. I find it easiest to write here than on any other of my websites. Why? Probably because I do it most often, I have my flows, my habits, my voice. And it goes quickly.

So how do you get this habit? Is it just a case of buckling down and doing it? Do you have to experiment a lot to know what your voice is? And when is a habit too comfortable and should be changed?

And how much do I have to apologise for using so many question marks in this post?

  1. We are creatures of habit – even when we travel, if we stay in one place we set up habits – where we buy the newspaper, what we do after breakfast or how the day unwinds…it’s not a bad thing, it’s just how we roll…(it’s creepily noticeable when the bank calls to make sure you are spending your money, as it’s been flagged against your usual pattern!)

    1. That’s true. We look for habits or comfort in a new environment pretty fast.

  2. I think habits make us feel safe and comfortable. They are good that way. But it’s always nice to change it up a little and see what that brings too.

    1. I guess it’s hard to know when things need changing.

  3. I like a fine balance between variety and creature of habit. Habit allows us to find flow as we don’t have to think as much. Variety keeps me interested and growing xx

    1. How do you find the boundaries on the balance for you?

  4. I love a good routine. That’s what holidays are for… to give you a break from routine! Sometimes I drive a different way to work if I’m feeling rebellious 🙂

    1. I like doing that – if I’m early I go along the beach 🙂

  5. Good habits are good for you… exercising, writing…

Bad habits are bad… eating comfort food, sitting around all day…

As always – and this is very much my mantra – focus on the good, avoid the bad. 🙂

    1. As always, very wise 🙂

  6. Im too lazy to be a creature of habit – that would require structure in my world, which is not going to happen 🙂

I do like some routine though – I enjoy being on holidays and experiencing new things, but then am grateful to be home and back in school routine sometimes.

    Hello from #teamIBOT

    1. Haha I don’t have much of a routine or structure in my life right now either.

  7. I’m definitely a creature of habit. Right down to ordering the same thing when I go out for dinner, at places we go all of the time because I know that it will be good. I think when the routine becomes same same and you begin to get bored, then that is when it’s time for a change.

    1. I get a bit like that – I want to know something is going to be good. Nothing worse than spending money and not liking what you get.

  8. Habits are like routines. They make us feel safe because we know what is coming next. I’m definitely a creature of habit but sometimes I change it up when I intentionally need a change.

    1. It is nice when you have a pattern.

  9. I am a creature of habit. I’d love to change but where to start ? I guess we all have a routine that works for us and gives us comfort.

    1. Changing is the hardest part – I guess just do one random, simple thing and see how you go from there.

  10. Honestly, it’s like I do everything on autopilot these days.

    1. You’re well programmed then 🙂

  11. I agree that good habits are good, and should be maintained. Sometimes I think if you don’t maintain the things you love as regular habits, that you forget about them and stop doing them.

    1. Interesting. But if you forget them, did you like them in the first place?
