Impure Thoughts

Impure Thoughts

Ever since I drowned my laptop, I’ve been bouncing between using a six year old laptop that has to freeze to open a new tab & our desktop, which is fairly new, but obviously not portable.

While my new job has a level of convenience that I’ve rarely had, it also pays less. And that means I can’t afford to replace my MacBook Air with a MacBook Air.

I was in a local Westfield earlier in the week & did notice some laptops in shop windows from around $350.

Clearly, these are not Apple laptops. They are leading my brain to impure thoughts of once again being able to blog anywhere with ease. And not with freezing when I open a new tab or do something complex, such as right click.

Impure Thoughts

But that means I would be going back to Windows. Ah! I don’t know if I can. I was very sick of them by the time I “converted” to Macs 6 years ago, and while I’ve still used windows regularly in employment, I haven’t liked doing so.

Now; I do have an old iPad and it does get a lot of use. It also survived the waterfall that killed my MacBook Air (it was in a case). But I really hate blogging from an iPad. I know some people do, but I just feel more comfortable with a laptop. It works for me.

Can I betray myself and go back to Windows? There’s a funky blue laptop that’s pretty cheap, or one that has a Mac-like keyboard. I can use my desktop for anything that requires processing power; so as long as I can type on the laptop and use the internet, then any old laptop will do. But, Windows…

Gah! Dilemma. The creepiest part of this is that I hadn’t told my husband any of my impure thoughts about buying a Windows based machine…and then he suggested it. Why must he read my mind?

What laptop to do you use? Are you Windows or Mac? Any el cheapo places that I can buy a small laptop?

  1. I’ve been on an anti-mac road for a couple of years now so I have a windows laptop.

It might just be me…but I find my latest laptop a bit challenging. I think Windows 8 was designed for touch screens. I don’t have a touch screen so I find it a little clunky to get around. So much so…that I mostly use word and the internet and that’s it!

But like I said…could just be me! I’m sure with a bit of effort, I could get it working better for me.

Yes! I’ve noticed that touch screen issue in Windows 8 & it’s really annoying. But, like you, all I want this for is word processing and the internet, so maybe I need to just ignore that part of Windows 8.

  2. Could you get a USB plugin keyboard for the iPad? Would that be easier?

I’m a Windows girl but am really hating Windows 8, might need to downgrade my new laptop back to 7.

I did think of that, but I just prefer laptops – iPads make everything just a bit too fiddly for my patience! I’ve just started using Windows 8 at work & I’m not a fan!!

  3. I’m a windows girl for my laptop (although I have other apple devices) but I have a ‘vintage’ and beloved laptop that’s gigantic by comparison to the tiny little notebook style things around now. I’ve been considering buying an el cheapo one too, just for when I’m out and about. Let us know how you go!

I’m not sure when I’ll have $300 to spare, but I think it’s the path I will have to go down for sheer practicality’s sake. I’ll blog about it – or rant about it haha.

  4. I was in this position once. I was in love with my MAC but when it dies I couldn’t afford to replace it and had to go WIndows. I have a touchscreen laptop and windows 8 and I’m not really a fan. I really don’t use the win8 home screen at all and it’s just my girls that use the touchscreen for it.
I’m no help really because I am still sitting on the fence and haven’t decided which way I’d like to climb off on.

The laptops I’m looking at are pretty bargain basement, so won’t have the touchscreen facility. I think I will have to go that way and just put up with the Windows aspect – I mean most things I need are just in a browser these days, so…

  5. Ahh, see I am the opposite. I have always used Apples when I have worked in offices and loved them … but at home I can only afford good old Windows. And I find windows is fine. Okay, not Apple and never will be, and I lust after them. But Windows will have to do for now. Having said that, even my old HP computer is dying on me fast. I have my daughter’s quite new Toshiba, which is out of warranty but not doing what it is supposed to do and sounds like yours – freezes every time I open a new tab or page. Ironically, it is the only computer I can skype from. I just keep my fingers crossed but of them keep going until I win the lottery and can afford one decent computer that does everything I need without complaining.

The freezing computer skypes well…haha that sounds like computers!

I’ve been Mac for a while, but I confess I’ve lost the love. Mainly because I’ve had a series of bad experiences at the Apple stores x

I feel like Apple has gone downhill in many ways since Steve Jobs died. Their ads got a bit trashier, their customer service lacked severely… I had a pretty negative experience with their app store support team where I was told to buy something new cos I could get a refund and then couldn’t, long story but it dragged out.
I think they were at their peak (for me) when they were a company that focused on creatives, not mass market.

  7. I bought a Mac Pro (I think that’s what it’s called) after Christmas with every intention of using it…but am still using my windows pc. I just feel more comfortable with it – even though it freezes when loading emails and is often a huge pain. About a month ago, my son absconded with my mac with the words, ‘it’s been sitting in your office unused for almost four months. I’m taking it.’ So that solves that little problem! Good luck.

Haha well decision made I guess 🙂 I think we do stick to what we’re comfortable with for a reason.

  8. I am total fence sitter because I use a windows desktop and a mac laptop and I like both for different reasons. What about buyng a second hand Mac? If your heart ies with Mac of course. A lot of businesses auction them off when they upgrade. xx

That’s a great idea – I’ll keep an eye out for a reliable second hand one. Thanks Sonia!

  9. I have a MACBOOK, iPad and iPhone and I seriously can’t see myself converting back to Windows!! I do most of my blogging on my iPad and mobile, but all the picture editing on my computer. Whichever is closest I guess! The blue one sounds fun and simple though – take the plunge haha!

I think just for sheer helpfulness I will have to go Windows for now. I’m not too happy but I think I just need to do it.
