I Don’t Know What Fancy Food Is

Beef Burger

I love food but I’m not a foodie in the popular sense. I generally don’t enjoy eating out & prefer to make my own food. On that topic…

What is fancy food?

Is it the cost of the ingredients?

The time you spend making the meal?

I don’t know what is or isn’t fancy. Every fortnight I blog my grocery receipts for others to see. I feel like that’s kinda useful but also not, seeing as I don’t meal plan or use recipes & IĀ  often make things on a total whim.

That’s how my brain works – so take what inspiration you need from my grocery lists!

To help you out with your cooking/shopping, I thought I would do a fortnightly wrap up of what I’ve eaten. My breakfast is usually something like a peanut butter sandwich on the go, so I’m going to exclude boring crap like that.

If there is something you’re interested in, please let me know and I’ll do my best to write a recipe – but I rarely make things the same way twice, so it will probably be a vague guideline.

Here’s what I’ve eaten (well, what food I’ve taken photos of) in the past fortnight:

Chocolate Muffin
A chocolate muffin, bought at work. For lunch. Yeah. Not the healthiest. But I needed it!

chicken roll
A lazy meal on grocery shopping night. But also delicious!

Beef Burger
Beef burger on Sourdough at the cafe near work – lunch catch up with a friend!

Tuna Salad Sandwich

Roast and mocktail
Roast chicken drumstick, veggies and mocktail

Salad and donut
Salad and donut. Because I’m a big contradiction. I liked both. A lot.

Egg Salad Toastie
Egg salad toastie at work for lunch.

Rice Paper Rolls
Rice Paper Rolls – I could literally eat these every night of my life.

Bacon and egg muffin
Bacon and egg muffin – grabbed from a deli on my way into work.

Katsu Don
Katsu Don from a great little place near my work. It’s really good.

Home made chicken and bacon pizza
Home made chicken and bacon pizza – we usually use Lebanese bread as our bases.

Chicken salad toastie

Creamy seafood pasta

Bacon eggs and onion
Bacon eggs and onion for breakfast one day

Pie fish egg and veggies
Chicken pie, fish, egg and veggies. I really had no ideas for dinner so I used up singles of stuff!

Feta stuffed olives
Feta stuffed olives and spicy twiggy sticks – my kinda snack.

Chicken roll
Another very lazy night – $8 cooked chicken and a bread roll from the freezer.

Scrambled eggs bacon and hashbrown
Scrambled eggs, bacon and hash brown with vegemite.

Roast chicken drumsticks
Roast chicken drumsticks, piles of veggies and some gravy.

cheese plate
Cheese plate!

Sweet potato chips
Sweet potato chips – after a mammoth meeting one day at work I had to get out and eat!

Home made burger
Home made burger – just minced beef with a little Hoi Sin sauce mixed in, an egg, some cheese and a bun.

So there you have it. Fancy? Not fancy? I have no idea. It’s food. I like it. This is way beyond my self imposed acceptable levels of eating out though – the little extras of chickens or take away for lunches add up a lot. But it was also pretty repsresnetative of a very tiring fortnight, and sometimes you do what you do to get through!

Which meal do you like best?

  1. Oh my god Vanessa that made me hungry (am yet to have Breakfast). I often see your pics on Instagram etc and like that you have a wide variety of food. I eat the same thing all of the time and am so not a foodie. I’m a fussy eater so fancy foods often aren’t an option for me!

Haha sorry! I do like a variety, but it’s all a pretty basic selection of food that we eat.

  2. Oooh yum!!
I am a big fan of simple foods, sometimes they taste just as good as “fancy” foods!!

Sometimes I feel like fancy just covers up food šŸ™‚

  3. I’ll just have the sweet potato fries thanks! I am happy with food in general fancy or not fancy as long as it tastes good.

They were so good! But so many of them I couldn’t finish them.

  4. Oh wow!!! Now Im starving. Geez your good taking all your foodie photos! Good work! xx

Sorry šŸ™‚ I’m not much of a patient “proper” food photographer because FOOD!

  5. Sweet potato chips for the win. Followed by the toasties. I like my food simple!

I get bored with toasties so quickly but they’re such an easy work lunch.

  6. Yeah, no fancy stuff here either. My boys are fusspots. We eat a lot of chicken. It looks like you had a fair amount of veggies there to balance out the take aways. And I’m an olive girl, too. *drools*

Love chicken! It’s our staple meat. You can do so much with it. I love my veggies too – ever since we stopped buying them in supermarkets and started buying them locally we’ve eaten heaps more because they taste nicer.

  7. You should put a warning at the start of this post. I’ve just eaten dinner and the pics made me hungry again! Fancy food according to me — food that costs a lot and you’re still hungry after. Did it once thanks to a choice by an acquaintance for her birthday…gah!

Haha I like that definition. Will post warnings on future posts šŸ™‚

  8. Some of my faves here too – Sweet potato chips I could eat every day and i love rice paper rolls too.
    Now I am droolling.
