5 Weeks Of Tonsillitis Has Killed My Soul

5 Weeks Of Tonsillitis Has Killed My Soul

Well, the headline kind of says it all, really. I’ve had tonsillitis on and off since March 15th. That batch came on overnight and severely. Two weeks of strong antibiotics later and I was “better”.

Only I wasn’t really. It felt like I had a sinus infection … or something. I just didn’t feel well again.

And then one weekend my throat started feeling sore again. I’ve had tonsillitis so often in my life that I know I have it before the infection is visible, so usually I have to wait a few days after feeling it before I can go to the doctors, otherwise I’m not sick for the first visit & it’s a waste of time, then I go back 24-48 hours later and they yelp at the state of my throat.

What do you know, I go back to the doctors on April 18th and hey, I have tonsillitis. A 5 day course of antibiotics and I’m feeling worse and sorer at the 5th day.

I headed back to my doctor yesterday, who confirms that the infection has visibly gone, so I don’t need the repeat antibiotics.

But I’m feeling so bad, right? I spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday in bed with fatigue. Going out for a few minutes to do necessary things (related: my real estate are really fucking incompetent) wiped me out. My GP thinks my body just isn’t coping with the infections so I’m on 50mg/day of prednisone this week to try to help my body get over it.

These two tablets daily will be responsible for much eating. Much. Eating.

I’m incredibly cranky that my day job workload is high this time of year and that I couldn’t take today off and have 5 straight days in bed to help me recover. I am feeling better than I was on Friday, so that’s something. I still feel far from great though. I really don’t want to talk to other people or be social. I don’t even want to say good morning to people. I just want to be left alone.

I’m cranky that years ago my old (lousy) GP told me I should get them out and then never did anything about it. I’m cranky that I trusted him that they didn’t seem to need removing any more.

I’m going to cry, beg, borrow and steal (I’m not sure how the borrow and steal will work, but you know, literary phrases don’t need reality, right?) at my surgeon the next time I see him to get me moved up the list because as the title says, 5 weeks of it is killing my soul. There’s only a category 3 wait list for tonsil removal in the public system but surely there’s some sort of ability to move within that!! SURELY! I hope there is.

Anyway, seeing as I’m going to be on a big dose of steroids this week, what is your go-to munchies food? I need to buy munchies food after work today.

  1. Man! I don’t blame you for feeling miserable. Sending hope that you feel even marginally better soon…

I have passed the extreme fatigue I had on Friday, but I still don’t feel great exactly. I’m really, really hoping the steroids kick this last amount over. But I’m not convinced. I’ve booked into another doctors later in the week just in case I am still sick and need a second opinion. I just don’t think my body is kicking the infection.

  2. I’m so sorry for your misery – there is nothing worse than an ongoing, soul sucking, painful condition that just won’t get better. I hope you find some time to rest and get a bit of sympathy and compassion at work (and with the health system! I work for a surgeon – and you can get bumped up the list if it’s serious – or you can go to ED if it’s really bad and hope they admit you!)

I was hoping they will be able to bump me up. Surely they’d be able to see it’s getting out of control. Over the weekend I was seriously wondering if I was going to end up in emergency and being referred to surgery.

  3. That sounds horrible! I hope you move up that damn waiting list and get them taken out soon!

I really hope so too. I spent the weekend hoping it would get worse so I could get emergency surgery, which isn’t a good place to be 🙁

  4. You really have had a crap time of it Vanessa. I hope you get this sorted soon, tonsillitis is SO painful.

  5. That sounds like a living hell.

      It feels like it.

  6. I have, fortunately, not had tonsilitis for a couple of years. Nothing worse than that razor sharp pain in the throat, and having to function every day. Bad enough getting bronchitis at the same time and not being able to stop coughing.

  7. Argh tonsillitis sucks! I rarely drink coke but it’s the best for a sore throat x

My husband is diabetic so we only have sugar free stuff in the house; I always have a feeling it’s the ‘real’ coke that kills stuff!!

  8. Hope you are feeling better soon. I have the opposite reaction when on steroids, I lose my appetite completely. Still put stacks of weight on though.

I wish I didn’t have an appetite on them.

  9. Gosh I feel for you on this. Since forever, you just have not been able to recover from anything. It must be connected with the repeat bouts of tonsillitis. Getting them out will not be fun but you can only hope your general health will improve over time. You HAVE had the flu infection yeah? When I was working at Uni it was free. Thank you for linking up today for #lifethisweek 17/52. Next week: Taking Stock.

I do have remnants of adenoid tissue as well, which to my (basic) understanding can cause repeated infections. If they can’t operate soon, then I want a few days of like IV antibiotics or something…. clearly the tablets aren’t doing it.

And yes to the flu shot! I’m happy we get it for free at work and when the email came around offering it, I booked into the first appointment I could get.

  10. You poor thing! Sending lots of positive healing energy and hope that you get moved up the list.

      I hope so!

  11. I suffered chronic tonsillitis as a child then had 20 years of relief before it came back after I had kids. I was lucky I had private health insurance so I was able to have them out without excessive waiting. I’ll never forget how wiped out I felt with every infection – it’s an attack on your entire immune system, not just in your throat. Fingers crossed that waitlist moves fast, otherwise, present at emergency when you’re at your worst and see whether they will do something about it for you. Hugs, it’s miserable being so sick for so long x

Today has regressed to me wishing I was sick enough to present to emergency 🙁 The public wait list for this is obscene, and apparently they’re even doing Saturday surgeries to try and get through all the people. How they can’t have hired someone for a year to catch people up (or something) is beyond me.

  12. Bloody hell that sounds awful. You poor thing. I hope you spoke to no one yesterday and just had a sign that said “I have tonsillitis”. If not, make one and hold it up at anyone who tries talking to you. Feel better soon xx

    1. Vanessa Smith says: Reply

      That’s a good idea – I need a sign for work!

  13. Surgery can’t come soon enough! Crossing fingers that you get moved up the list x

Surely they’ve got to. I’m expecting to get another dose of antibiotics tonight … even if i could get some mega dose of antibiotics to at least get me over this. I’m so tired of it 🙁
