Why You Should Reply To Comments On Your Blog

One of the things I love about blogging is how much of a two-way conversation it is. Sure, the blogger may press the publish button, but the readers have the right of easy reply – the comments section. While on mainstream news websites I never ever read the comments, blogs have a much smaller and, if I may say so, higher quality audience. This means that receiving comments is one of the things I love most about blogging. Sure, I can see from statistics software that people have come to my blog, but a comment means they liked the post! However, getting comments is a bit like getting a contract – they are there as a discussion, not a reward to the writer.

Here are some of the reasons you should reply to comments on your blog

Why You Should Reply To Comments On Your Blog

It Shows Engagement

Replying to comments shows that you value your readers enough to engage in them.

It’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine that many web ‘guru’ types write giant, popular posts on how to get comments and engage with readers, then literally don’t reply to any comments. It totally wastes any credibility that the blogger has, in my book.

It Makes Readers Want To Come Back

You know what’s even better than being able to comment on an article you liked? Getting a thoughtful reply from the person who wrote it.

It Looks Professional

This is kind of tied into my first point about showing engagement, but it also makes you look more professional as a blogger. For example, in a Media Kit you might say you have an engaged audience, but if you don’t reply to your comments, you’re missing an important connection to that audience.

Tip: Set aside time each week to reply to your comments. More often if you have the time!

To Make New Friends

Yes, this one is relevant even if your blog is strictly business. You know that saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? Well, replying to blog comments is the fastest and easiest way to start building relationships – think about it!

If someone has commented on your blog, you clearly already have a shared interested of some kind. Give a thoughtful reply and boom! Friendship started.
