How University Made Me A Better Blogger

I have an undergraduate degree in anthropology and I started a masters in writing (which I dropped out of because it wasn’t challenging me). I tried a Masters in Communications, but it was anti-internet and I dropped out of that too. I ended up doing a Graduate Certificate in Social Change and Development in 2016. While I don’t believe that everyone needs to go to uni, and going to uni doesn’t suit everyone, these are the reasons how it has helped me as a blogger.

Writing & Research

My undergraduate degree was assessed largely by essays, which means I can research and write 3000+ word academic articles in my sleep.

Note Taking

If you followed my personal blog last year, you would have seen that I tweeted a LOT at the ProBlogger conference. My ability to do this lies in the sheer quantify of experience in three years of listening to lecturers and writing down my own notes in a way that I could understand. I went to uni before people had laptops and iPads – in fact at the end of my degree I was the one wierdo with a laptop!

You’ll notice from above that most of these skills were gained by sheer experience – three years at uni is a lot of time to be focusing on writing and associated skills. Imagine where three years of consistent blogging can take you!

What skills have you used consistently in life that you apply to blogging?
