Why You Shouldn’t Become A Morning Person

It seems like the internet is always telling everyone to wake up early. That’s the only way there are hours in the day (apparently) and if you sleep in, you’re not hustling and will fail. Etc. I’m sure there are more and less dramatic ways of putting it, but overall I’m a bit tired of the sentiment that only morning people are acceptable.

Why You Shouldn't Become A Morning Person

What Is A Morning Person?

I view being a morning person as one of two statuses: you wake up cheerful and ready to go, or your body clock is so used it to it that you wake up early, but it doesn’t mean you like it much or that it suits you.

Cheerfulness

I can’t really relate to this one personally. I’m not exactly grumpy when I wake up but I’m not really kick started and enthusiastic either. I used to be someone who jumped out of bed on the first alarm but in recent years I’ve come to embrace the snooze button.

Habit Morning Person

This is me. I have whinged before about having a long commute. This means I am up early and I need to get to a train station while there are still car parks available. This is what dictates my work hours and time to wake up on weekdays.

Do You Need To Become A Morning Person?

Necessity might dictate it, yes. It certainly as with me. The need is very clear for me: I need to be able to get to my day job, so I can pay my bills. As with nearly everything though, I believe that the correct answer is the one that works FOR YOU. Maybe that is waking up early. But maybe working late at night is when your brain is fired up. And that’s fine too.

Think Of Others

If you’re cheerful in the morning and your partner, family, colleagues or friends aren’t… well, they might start to hate you 🙂 Of course, this could also be a good tactic to get them to avoid you in the morning, so I say do whatever works for you!

Are you a morning person? Do you think the internet is a tad too obsessed with people “needing” to be a morning person?

  1. I love being a morning person only because I’m so much more productive and I really appreciate those extra early hours when I am usually undisturbed and have the whole place to myself! I must say though, now that winter is here, I too am really embracing the snooze button!

If it works for you, then by all means embrace it!

  2. I laughed out loud at the title. I’m a morning person & am at my most productive in the morning & fade quickly at night. My daughter though is a morning person out of necessity but man, you can’t talk to her for at least the first hour! I’d like to sleep in, but am worried I’ll miss out on something!

I’m totally for it if it suits you, but it’s that online “mornings are best” attitude that riles me up. When you work best is the best for you – forcing yourself into being a morning person may not be that ideal.

  3. Ha! I’m really struggling with mornings at the moment. I think I used to be the latter… I was in the habit of waking early but once up I’d be quite productive etc.. It’s just getting out of bed that’s the issue.

At the moment I’m waking really tired and headachy most days and struggle to get up. Last night I was in bed for 12hrs and eventually got up after 9.30 today. I was wearing my Fitbit so I could see how I was sleeping but I took so long to get to sleep and woke so much it depressed me so I stopped monitoring my sleep. I know it’s worse at the moment cos I’m having lots of stress-related dreams so hopefully that will improve down the track.

Oh stress dreams are the worst, they really throw off mood and motivation. I hope they pass.

  4. I’m a morning person. Others are night owls. I love how the world we live in now makes it possible for us all to be productive – the internet, online everything.

Yes, having access to our collective stuff at any time is really a good thing for different work preferences.

  5. Isn’t it great how different we all are? Since I’ve retired and it’s winter here, I find I’m sleeping later and not rushing around in the mornings so much. But then the afternoon comes rushing up and I’ve achieved nothing! I can’t stay up late anymore, actually I never could, so I think I’m probably more of a morning person without all the jumping around! #Lifethisweek

I feel that afternoon feeling on the rare occasions I can sleep in … the “aah it’s 11am and I’ve done nothing!” 🙂

  6. Now unless I “have” to be somewhere I wake when I am ready. Otherwise it’s an alarm. I did that for almost 40 years of working life and I am glad to have left it behind. I like all times of the day so cannot align with any one in particular.

I keep leaving myself to sleep in recently but then also missing how good sunrises are.

  7. I am a morning person but probably not the cheerful kind. At least not anymore. I do hit the snooze button as well a fair bit. I think for me, I prefer getting my exercise out of the way in the morning but yeah, the cheerfulness tends to take a while to set in! 😀

I wonder if I’d prefer to get exercise out of the way first in the day but then I’d probably have to get up at 5am and that just isn’t going to happen.
