Pay for disability consulting

If you’ve read my post on codesign, you’ll know I have some problems with how the expertise of disability is framed.

This post is a short expansion of that topic. This post calls for people to recognise the expertise of disability and pay us as consultants.

It does happen, but not nearly enough. There’s a problem with disabled people being expected to volunteer knowledge, often traumatising knowledge, without compensation. This is particularly irritating when disabled people have a higher cost of living than non disabled people (as covered here).

Everything I do costs me a lot. If I spend time on codesign, it means I can’t do other tasks that day, such as cook or collect medication. I require that I am financially compensated so that I can pay someone else to do those tasks for me.

Even if you ignore the crip tax, we live in capitalism. If you claim to value disabled voices, then value us in the primary method of value used in this system by paying us a proper amount of money.
