The palatability problem

The charity model of disability relies heavily on the palatability of those in the front and centre. (A lot of disability organisations and disability focused products and services also focus on palatability.)

This marginalises those who can’t perform things such as:

  • wellness
  • gratefulness
  • prettiness
  • skinniness
  • whiteness

The effect of marginalising people who fall outside of palatability is that research efforts are centred on those who can achieve a socially acceptable outcome.

For example, charities will be ready to celebrate and showcase someone who can return to full time work, not someone who moves from bedbound to housebound.

If we remove palatability, we add in a layer of equity.
