Episode Script:

Welcome to the second time podcast. I’m Vanessa.

I skipped recording last week – my fifteenth week of job hunting – because my head was too sound sensitive to risk doing audio work. I didn’t want my head to blow up into a full migraine, so I skipped recording for my own sake. It was a quiet week on the job hunting front anyway. I spent the first few days of the week getting through a high volume of applications. Then the rest of the week got filled up with life stuff, like issues at the pharmacy, a tradie who cancelled and then showed up anyway, hot water issues that ended up as a fight between two companies because neither wanted to take responsibility for work we hadn’t requested and couldn’t refuse.

I also had an email from the outplacement services last week saying that I’d had access to their services for 10 weeks and they wanted to know what I thought. I told them they offer nothing of value and the coaching was a farce, which lead to them emailing, texting, and calling me. I am unsure why they think they have anything of value, it’s all AI packed nonsense behind a paywall and well, you all heard the summary of the coaching session in episode seven. Also, it’s funny how people think you’re going to help them fix their business for free. Nope. If I’m the first disabled job seeker they’ve had, they can pay for lived experience. I don’t work for free.

This week, my sixteenth week of job hunting, I planned to take the week off. I have been going at this at a very high rate of work for so long, and last week being physically difficult was a warning sign that I needed a break. For week sixteen, my plan was that instead of spending two to three hours a day on job hunting, that would be my limit for the week. It went kind of ok…. until Wednesday, when I somehow had four interviews in the same day. Not much of a week off; four interviews in one day is not what I would describe as restful! As always, most people are taking a very long time to recruit, so I don’t know the status of any roles.

For mutual aid corner this week I’d like to feature Casey. They are a queer, neurodivergent, disabled business owner in California. They’ve had a challenging time with their health recently and could use support from people who are able to give. Their Ko-Fi (or “coffee”, I’m not sure how people pronounce it), anyway the link is in the show notes.
