I found a note I’d emailed to myself a few months ago:
There comes a point where people seem more invested in their public profile and palatability than their standards and why they started talking about a topic. I hope that never happens to me because palatability starts to undermine the value of their early work.
At the same time as agreeing with this note that I sent myself, I don’t know if it’s fair. We all have to do shitty things to keep a roof over our heads. We’re also allowed to change as people. I don’t think this is judgement I’m passing on someone, so much as noting paths that don’t sit right with me and that I don’t want to take. I don’t want to drop my standards for money. I would be an awful famous person (I’m far too prone to telling annoying people to fuck off) so I don’t think fame would impact me as much as the lure of steady income.
What do you think? What would influence you to drop your standards for palatability?
