Could you go a day, a week, a month or your life without makeup or high heels?
I do.
One thing first: I’ve never been a girly girl. Even as a child I played with fire trucksĀ more than I played with my mermaid Barbie doll.
As a teenager I dabbled a little bit with wearing makeup and high heels, but by the time I left home at 19, I just didn’t care much anymore. It wasn’t worth the effort and it really wasn’t worth the incredibly small amount of money I had to live off of. Many people told me I’d feel differently about these things as I got older. They basically said I was being an immature rebel and I would grow out of it. And now I’m in my mid-20s and I still don’t wear make up or high heels. I like clothing, but it has to be comfortable first, stylish second. And I don’t mean fad stylish, I mean suitable for your body shape, size and type.
I’m not saying everyone needs to be like me, if you like these things, then that’s fine. But I do find society a bit difficult and extremely full of double standards for this. I posted on a friendly closed forum the other year, saying something to the effect of “Hi, I’m going to a casual beach wedding in a few weeks, would like some guidance on what to wear – by the way I can’t walk in high heels and I don’t own makeup because I don’t like it.”
Even in this community, which is pretty open minded and friendly, I encountered a straight backlash, with person telling me that just because it was a beach wedding, that was no reason not to wear makeup.
In the end, something came up and I couldn’t go to the wedding, so that solved the immediate problem for me.
But how do you dress up suitably in this type of society when you don’t wear makeup and literally cannot walk in high heels? If anyone has any tips for dressing up while staying comfortable, comment and let me know! I’ll share the best ones on twitter or in a new post.
It’s so nice to hear of someone else who isn’t make-up or high heals obsessed. I don’t wear make-up! I have bought it, it sits around until it goes all gross and clumpy and then I through it out. At my own wedding, instead of paying a million dollars to get it done, I went a talked to a fiend who is a make-up artist, to give me some tips and tricks and tell me the best stuff to buy. So every now and again, I do wear it now, I mean
I paid for the damn stuff. As for high heels, seriously too impractical, for life.
I once found makeup from 10 years ago! And high heels I will never physically get… I find sandals with no support (especially the ‘roman’ kind that were in the other summer) so uncomfortable that I can’t even imagine heels!
