Disability supports in Australia make me want to scream

I’ve written about my attempt to get non-NDIS supports. In 2024, in 2025, then the complaint I lodged… I’ve written about how Foundational Supports could be done well if they tried.

For even more reading, check out my advocacy page.

I’ve also written to disability organisations (not published or shared on my website as it contained information I couldn’t publish) with concerns about the supports, particularly how the medical services offered by the states fail people.

My frustrations boiled up this weekend and you can see that in the comments of this Instagram post.

And now there are the first clues of what one state is doing for the first part of Foundational Supports. And I have to repeat this, as much as I am fucking done screaming, have other stressful things going on, and I’m sick of being ignored…. we will NOT get quality care from Foundational Supports.

The link above explains the first bits of information on how NSW will implement Thriving Kids. General supports are informational. People have gotten cranky at me when I’ve said this isn’t of value to me, because they’ve ignored where I said “TO ME”. Yes, information needs to exist. But lets not pretend that information solves anything. Most of us with disabling chronic illnesses know more about our needs than most doctors, we have to, it’s how we survive. Information does not mean we don’t need supports. Comprehension doesn’t un-disable us.

This is the part that’s most concerning to me. For most of us who fall outside of the NDIS, or for those who suspect they’ll be targeted in being kicked off the NDIS, the hope for supports falls under Targeted supports. The wording on the NSW website is the concerning part:

“For children who need extra help for a specific period of time.”

This clearly says that these supports will be time-limited and non-ongoing.

They are designing the system thinking that most disabled people are only disabled for discrete periods of time. They are designing the system thinking that the “real” disabled people will be on NDIS and everyone else doesn’t really need help because they’re not really disabled. Instead of rolling out supports to all disabled people, they are planning to abandon us.

They are designing this system on inaccurate information and outdated views of disability, and it is disabled people who will suffer.
