Goals are not an easy thing to have – Take 5 and brainstorm freely. Write down all of your ideas. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Don’t worry, you won’t actually know which is which until later! (And who said ugly was bad?)

What was the first goal you thought of?

What comes to mind first is key – not always because it’s the right thing, but because it often shows your most recent influence. Take the time to think if it is a goal that you want, or if it is a goal that you have seen others have. It could be both. That’s ok. But you need to know which it is.

How will you reach the goal?

If you have a plan, even an outline of a plan, then you’re further ahead than just deciding a goal and hoping it will happen. Break it down into steps – you can work backwards from that goal. If you like SMART goals, go for that. If you find that doesn’t work for you (a camp I’m firmly in) then find a way that suits you to track and achieve your steps.

When will you reach the goal?

A goal is an idea until you actually write it down. Knowing when you will reach that goal means that you can add times to the plan you devised and know what you need to work on now vs what you need to do later.

Tip: you don’t have to wait until the new year to start! If you want to start now, then start now!
