The performative parts of work

I’ve had this topic floating around in my head for a long time. I don’t know how to approach it. I think people will hate it and dismiss it. But when someone else mentioned it on social media, I chimed in. Why not? And it was surprisingly positive.

Threads post by username itslaurlyn saying "Are employers sure they want 40 hours a week from us? I mean we can give it if they really want it. But I bet what they REALLY want is 24 hours of attentive, productive work a week. That goes farther. Gets more done. But sure, here's 40 hours so we have *appearance* of productivity.

Something I don't yet have the words for is around this topic; how if we removed performative aspects of work we could let more people with disabilities work. Some of us could work more if we could just do work tasks not performance hours.

I don't think this will ever happen though. I mean, I'm 100% free to accomodate in a job. I just work from an office in my house instead of an office in your building and that baffles the shit out of people. If people can't handle something as straightfoward as that, I don't think they'll ever interrogate what they think of as work but isn't work.

I can’t remember if I’ve shared it on here or not, but one of my goals is that if I’m ever a big enough business, I want to make sure I’m hiring people with a disability. I don’t have any grand plans to have a bundle of employees, that’s not the type of business I want to run. I have no interest in being a manager. But if I have enough good fortune I’d love to be able to pay it forward and help people get work and let them work in the way/pace that suits them.
