Why Have A Newsletter?

For much the same reason as you should use wordpress.org as a blogger, you need to make sure that you actually own the hard work you put into things. Newsletters are something that you “own”, and can’t be taken away from you. Just one of the reasons why you need to have a newsletter.

A newsletter is something that you have control over. Facebook could be shut down tomorrow. Twitter might delete your account. For whatever reason, social media can dissaper.

However, an email list is something that is independent. It is not social media. You can export lists of email addresses and have an actual back up of the details of the people who have chosen to hear from you.

Sometimes bloggers ask if they need a newsletter if they don’t sell anything, if they literally don’t make a cent from their blogs, and don’t want to. And that’s a hard one.

Frankly, if you have the time to write one, then I still would have one. It’s a way to communicate that has less noise and more intimacy (not like that, you gutter thinkers!) with your readers. It lets people who like your writing make sure they don’t miss anything. If your domain got hacked and your host went offline, you could still start a blog on a new URL and tell people where you are now. So while it is less critical, I still think it’s very useful.
