Art Is Not Free

I get so mad when something gets thrown in my face that shows people think all kinds of art should be free. Right at this moment as I type this, I’m cranky at a specific situation. But it’s not the only one.

Don’t copy books online and put them up “for free”. You’re stealing money from writers.

Don’t tell a writer to go to a site and download the book “for free” if it’s hard to source.

Don’t.

Unbelievably, this stuff just seems so common. It’s not just writing: someone reached out to me to ask if they could submit a photo I had taken in a competition at their workplace. Of course I said no, take your own damn photo.

Just fucking don’t, ok? Something being easy to copy doesn’t make it ethical and/or legal.

Psst, I’m looking at putting together some short courses this year on getting a book written. Make sure you sign up to my newsletterif you want to hear about them. I’m thinking one specifically for small biz owners, and one along the lines of “get your first draft done”. Probably $50.
