Recently an article was published by ABC news about how chronic health conditions are impacting productivity. Naturally the word burden was use multiple times in the article. I assume this is an economic framing that relies on a charity and/or medical model approach to disability.
But the biggest problem I have with this article is what I shared on social media at the time it came out. The glaring gap.
There was NOT ONE mention of giving supports (including financial) for people with temporary or permanent health conditions.
Health conditions are often disabling. We deserve support.
I’m so tired of the divide between “disabled” and “disabling chronic illness” that the government enforces. If you’re disabled and need support that’s all that should matter.
I’m burnt out at the moment (have been for months) because I’m ignored and unsupported and dismissed… all because it’s a chronic illness that disables me?
It’s fucking ridiculous.
If we’re a “burden” and dragging the productivity of the country down, why won’t you help us?
