Oh, that’s terrible!

Oh, that’s terrible!

I’m tired of people centering their reactions to my “stuff” when I’m the one who has to live through the shitty parts & they don’t.

This is what I got when I was job hunting in 2023. I had people telling me how awful it was that I was housebound. It wasn’t about me, their tones told me they considered it a fate worse than death. It was something they didn’t like or want.

Oh, that’s terrible!

I made them uncomfortable. They don’t want to work with me. Every day I would remind them of their worst nightmare.

While job hunting in 2023 was definitely the most and worst I had experienced this, it’s not a unique type of ableism.

A few years ago when I was still able to work on site, I was working at a university and it was time to renew my first aid training. Tourniquets were being discussed, use and risk. When the instructor mentioned that they come with the risk of amputation, an overly privileged person in the room spoke up and said she’d rather die. Yep. Someone doing first aid, meant to CARE FOR a possible injured person …

I don’t think ableists should be certified to provide first aid. I do not trust them to not let me die because the alternatives are too “horrific” to them.
